LukPlus looking for Coropata publisher at GDC

If you're reading this and you're in charge of business development for a game publisher, and if you're at GDC -- as unlikely as all that is -- please go talk to LukPlus. According to Siliconera, the publisher has a meeting room at the convention, and is actively working to find a North American publisher for its cute DS puzzle game Coropata.

We sampled Coropata at TGS and found it charming, and we'd appreciate the opportunity to do things like buy it in a store and read all the text. We admit that a cutesy, anime-style puzzle game similar to The Incredible Machine may be somewhat of a niche interest, though.

Super Street Fighter 4 Teaches You About Turkish Oil Wrestling

Mar 10, 2010 Posted Under: 1UP.com feeds, PREVIEW

At a press event in San Francisco yesterday, Capcom announced the last character in Super Street Fighter 4'ss roster: Hakan, an Arabic wrestler whose main mechanic involves pouring oil all over his body.

It's not as goofy as it sounds; Turkish wrestlers bathe themselves in olive oil as a means of spiritual and religious significance. Capcom has adopted this tradition into Hakan's motif, and as a result created a powerful grappler who plays like a mix of the Russian wrestler Zangief, and the Japanese sumo wrestler E. Honda. Similar to other grapplers in the Street Fighter series, Hakan's a big threat in close-range -- but getting close to the opponent is challenge, simply because of his weak mobility.

Star Wars: The Old Republic EA’s Most Expensive Project to Date

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Of all the MMORPGs vying for World of Warcraft's crown, Star Wars: The Old Republic stands a pretty fair chance against Blizzard's juggernaut. But being a contender doesn't come cheap, as EA's chief financial officer Eric Brown explained in today's meeting with Wedbush Morgan Securities in New York. In fact, Brown called The Old Republic the "largest ever development project, period, in the history of the company."

According to a report on Eurogamer, Brown outlined the average cost of an EA developed game at around $30 million. MMOs, however, cost "significantly more than that," and Brown estimates that World of Warcraft specifically may have required upwards of $100 million. "That's lifetime [research and development] to actually ship it and obviously then there's maintenance subsequent to ship and expansion packs," Brown continued.

So, if World of Warcraft took $100 million to get off the ground back in 2004, how much can EA expect to spend on their Star Wars MMO? Brown didn't throw out any numbers of his own, but even if we assume The Old Republic costs the exact same amount to launch as Blizzard's game, that's still forgetting a couple key expenses: any costs associated with the Star Wars license, and, if you really wanted to be picky about it, the $620-million-plus EA spent acquiring developer Bioware and Pandemic back in 2007.
